It is very much and deceptively easy to fall for this stuff especially since it really banks on very true circumstances like the fact these gig-workers are exploited for what they are worth.

Like the story seems atleast believeable at first glance, especially if you already have a notion to hate on these types of companies. Especially with a rather left-leaning bubble like the fediverse.

Its also hard to fight against it. The outrage-factor is a huge deal. And almost no one, included myself, does take the time to validate such stuff before sharing. That may also be impossible almost for a normal human being that is not connected to some other people in the industry
