edit: Rewritten to avoid making possibly false claims about how Bluesky works.
I specifically take issue with ActivityPub's focus on instances. It's the maximum possible form of decentralization, but it comes with issues that a different federated protocol may not have: Your choice of an instance is disproportionately important to the outcome of your experience because
- communities often conglomerate on instance boundaries.
- your admin has complete control over what parts of the fediverse you may and may not see.
- your identity is tied to an instance and the account moving process is just a workaround.
I don't see this, and all the drama associated, ever going away and I can see why this hurts the reputation of the fediverse. Artists join MastoArt and think fedi is boring — of course they do with such an admin. And of course you can go "well duh, should've chosen a better instance", but how do you expect people to know all the intricacies of using fedi right right from the start? I find these concerns completely understandable. It's a fucking pain.
