the "apolitical" redot engine is talking about "forced" DEI 🤡

(whatever the hell they mean by "forced" DEI escapes me)

@puniko@mk.absturztau.be it almost reads as satire. if i didnt know better, i would think it was!

@puniko Weird thinking. Like everything that you produce will come out queer and nonbinary just because you use a software from an open minded developer.

@puniko whenever someone specifically distances themselves from progressive stuff and claims to be apolitical that is always 100% of the time a conservative that is just too scared to admit it due to the backlash they’d (rightfully) get

@Clover@akko.wtf exactly. thats probably why they still try to justify their fork with such posts

@puniko "Hey I made a cool 3D model of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Terminator. Ah, crap I accidentally used the Gay-Version of Blender!"

@puniko So googling reveals DEI is Diversity, Equality and Inclusion. So I guess they are basically trying to shoot against the "forced" inclusion of divers people, disabled people and would not have black people and women?

I dunno what they want to say with "forced". No one forces anyone to do anything. Just have to live with the consequences. akko_shrug

There is plenty to like about divers representation in games. Like in Stardew Valley I can play a male character but dress them all female. Like you know a skirt and long hair. Which is so cool to me.

Also I don't think any of the inclusion is really forced. Its just the devs deciding to give divers people, divers options to play.

But I guess we are all just to left to understand.

@stefan@akko.lightnovel-dungeon.de i know what DEI is, but what they mean by "forced" escapes me. especially in case of redot, since godot never "forced" you to add minorities into your game. its really silly

@stefan@akko.lightnovel-dungeon.de honestly, this looks more like another attempt to paint themselves as not being a bigot fork of godot. imo they fail with that, considering why they did the fork in the first place

@puniko

I will just feel free to answer both posts here xD.

I did not so I just added that for myself tbh. Ye it sure is silly. They include these options to make people happy. Nothing more tbh. Especially in games where you have the freedom to do anything with it.

This is your rather typical behaviour in game communities. It allows people freedom. Which is great for the diverse crowd especially in RPGs, but it also opens the door for bigots ("good old times") where they (try?) to eradicate everything that does not fit their view.

And then stating being "apolitical" or "politics" does not belong to games. When it is a part of any medium tbh. Also unanswered: What do they consider political?

Likely everything. Feeling opprossed so hard by a minority that just wants to live their live normally.

I guess being "political" is just a neccisity in queer space otherwise you would just get drowned by "political" conservatives or sth. My guess would be all queers would just love to live their lives peacefully.

Also might gone a bit overboard puni, sorry neocat_woozy That fallacy is just way to common in gaming...

@puniko
Just the latest scapegoat for idiots.
I cannot express how much I do not care about this joke of a fork.

@puniko "Forced" in this concept means that it was jammed into a game to be politically correct, not that some shadow cabal held a gun to their head.

It is very true that it's forced into many games these days without fitting at all. Like jamming a square peg into a round hole.

@quad @puniko good ol' brownie points I suppose? Though I have a hard time thinking about a game where it would not fit at all. After all they are fantasy worlds mostly... Maybe I am playing the wrong games?

But you can of course argue that shadow cabal existing, since the devs "chicken out" by forcing something into a game where it does not belong (in their view). They just don't want the shitstorm ensuing. There might be reasons to do so. But the devs would need to explain that very well to not be labeled bad or something worse.

@stefan @puniko indie games do it because they have interesting ideas and are serving those markets directly. AAA companies are coerced by big investment firms to hire DEI consultants and meet criteria. forced is a strong word, coerced by limiting access to capital is accurate. there is nothing wrong with progressive themes or minority representation in games but siding with corporate coercion on art is not progressive.

just buy indie games, they do "DEI" correctly, and without coercion.

There is more to it than that as it's just Critical Theory being funded to drive corps into the ground for various reasons. Sometimes to buy IP cheap, and other times for geopolitical reasons.

@stefan @puniko I dunno why they do it, likely brownie points because they think it'll give them PR would not surprise me.

The cool topic these days is AC: Shadows I guess. I usually just don't play most of the games where this is an issue though, so I'm not too up-to-date on which exact games have this issue. But I did play AC: Valhalla and it does feel really weird that pretty much right at the start of the game my Viking settlement that supposedly existed in the last 800s pretty quickly has both arabic consultants and a chinese shopkeep pop up.

Again, I play few of these games, and in the situations where I do I can generally manage to just ignore it, but diversity points being forcibly jammed into games during the past number of years honestly isn't something i'd even consider an opinion, it's just a plain fact at this point

@quad @stefan @puniko
They are literally open about it... it's not just a fact, they are giving guidance on what to do and basically boasting about it.

Terrorise your marketing team... that will go down well.

@quad @stefan @puniko Yeah. Now they have the consultant business and funding.

When I last did a dive into this, I recall funding coming from the sister using her brother's money who was a game dev that committed suicide after being accused of something. But there are a few of these groups so I forget which she funded.

Consultancy seems to be a big thing that large corporations get involved with, probably a part of their model and they can prove it is diverse for their funding. Or they are just outsourcing this aspect of the business.

@quad @puniko @stefan It's worth considering that AAA games have gotten more expensive to produce and it can often take years to finish, and so they are getting funding from other sources who end up becoming their customers. The customers are no longer the customers but a product to sell to advertisers or funders for money. So much is data-driven which can be sold on, designed to keep you addicted and to make as much money off you as possible before you move onto the next product. The game industry is really bad with this in certain genres, even including gambling mechanics.

@stefan @puniko misread. the middle word is "Equity". it was chosen because, as you demonstrated, it looks like "Equality" when you're reading fast and not fully paying attention, and "Equality" polls really well, but "Equity" is basically the opposite of that.
