Conversation

It’s wild that the website of the first online community I joined 20 years ago is still online. It went into readonly mode 14 years ago, but all the user uploads and forum posts are still there.
I doubt we’ll be able to say the same about Discord communities.

@volpeon not when some reddit powermodding dickhead (yes including me) can just evaporate a community by deleting "the server"

@volpeon may I ask what kind of community it is? more tech or a specialty forum?

@volpeon same for my first community. it died out, but it's still online. Because keeping a SMF forum online is cheap.

@pixel @kaia I saw the errors and fully expected to see a blank page otherwise

@aetios@sns.minovsky.space @volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip yeah, I run one of these, it died out years ago and most of the regulars are just talking on Discord by now, but we're still keeping the forums online for exactly these reasons, I'd rather see a public software release or otherwise useful info right away on a web page that could be indexed by search engines than getting lost behind months of chatting on an invite-only Discord server

@volpeon they might as well already be. Trying to get something like old conversations out of a Discord community is nigh-impossible as is.
