@epsi blobcatjoy Oh epsi this might not ne a problem anime tbh but the source-material (be it manga and especially some LN) does that constantly. I guess thats what you get with amateur-writers (not meant negativ but...)

@epsi In fact anime is a great material for showing things, no need to bend reality, it is but a mere suggestion, not even a guide.

@epsi Meanwhile there's like Bee Train: I'll show you landscapes with great music, and at least one character having basically lost themselves.
Explanations? No, you'll basically only hear questions and riddles.

@epsi Heh in fact made me rewatch .hack//SIGN because it's been years and it's even self-aware:
(Note: Mimiru's name hasn't been given yet even though it's her 3rd appearance, same for main character)
(Mimiru) How about an explanation? .hack//SIGN episode 01 - screenshot_mpv:01 - Roleplay@00:12:24.994.png

@epsi I sometimes like exposition cuz I can lose track of names or fail to read what is implied in the character interactions that progresses the plot. I find that anime tends to exposit things I don’t need much help understanding while they can leave stuff like character motivations cryptic. Like, sometimes characters have these vague conversations and suddenly change behavior and you’re like wtf what just happened and I could barely understand what they were talking about or what the issue was. I sometimes wonder if that’s a side-effect of Japan having a “high context” communication culture that so much of the social interaction is implied or left extremely vague in what is being said in the show, or if it’s just a result of bad translation (e.g., the translators trying to keep the nuances of the selected kanji but instead producing what is just vagueness and ambiguity in English). The last possibility is I’m just socially inept and this is why I sometimes get lost with the character relationships. lol

Is the problem of "The adaption is just an advertisement for the light novel and you have to somehow import or pirate the light novel if you are interested in what happens in volume 2 to 500." still as big as in the hey days of stuff like Haruhi?

@domodak @epsi I would say so myself a lot of the popular stuff is availiable through availiable channels by american publishers. So no nees to pirate necesarily.

Also digital availiability is quite good I think. You normally get shows with multiple seasons if they are popular. Sometimes anime also really stands on its own and adds a lot to a work. Something I noticed with 4-koma adaptionsy where the anime team gets some liberties to animate stuff since they is quite some space to fill. See Bocchi the Rock! or Pop Team Epic. Though both are Manga and not LN of course.

It is hard as well to stuff a all of the LN content into an anime. Goblin Slayer generally did well in its anime in that regard. Nothing was really missing by my analysis. They just restructured the order a bit so some stuff does not make as much sense...
