Some ranting about poor quality digital manga from Yen Press
Show content
I need to rant a bit so fell free to skip if you are not in the mood.

You know I like reading some manga here and there as well. If its the source material for some anime I liked I will read the manga sure.

I also like supporting the industry when I can. So I was really delighted to hear when Yen Press (finally) announced they would release bocchi in english.

Sadly the english digital release is kinda "eh" at best. But maybe thats me you tell me.

Basically the issue is: the images of the pages are kinda low-res for reading on an e-book-reader at native 300dpi.

They ship a very basic epub in the first place where one page is basically a JPEG. So its all JPEGs in an ePub-Trenchcoat. Which is generally fine with me. Its kinda cheap but I get it. For 4-koma such as bocchi one could have gone the extra mile and sepeate the single images into their own files. Would be great for quality. But thats I guess to expensive. Though the tech would be there.

What I cannot wrap my head is why Yen Press in general seems to ship low-res images. They are not super low-res but 800-something by 1200-something just does look not great on a 300 dpi 1404x1872 screen.

Funnily enough the color pages look pretty great since the pocketbook color 3 only does 150 dpi on color which is way closer to the image-res I have to work with.

I am just very dissapointed in that fact. I never noticed that hard on my older 6" (you would still see blurriness) but on the 7.8" you notice.

I do wonder why yen press can't get their act together and ship something from this era. Other publishers manage to ship better files while only modestly increasing filesizes.

I still want to support the series and the translation is fine to me... But I dunno if I might need to set sails for something more quality...

Might add #manga while I am at it

edit: small correction on the actual size. Its 900x1291 per page...

@weebdeluxe The Pocketbooks are my favorites though they do lack some features compared to android reader (not that many anyway) and have their flaws I like they are built upon linux and have some community behind them.

The color is nice though finding the right balance so things look good is hard.

@weebdeluxe true true. It is still kinda seeing one of favorite stories being botched so hard in its digital form. Partly you can blame YP but also Japan... since they likely only provide so much to the english pubs.
