@volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip I still don't get how anyone thought that was a good idea. neofox_googly_blep

As someone who spent 2-3h daily in VR at one point, I have never felt the desire to spend more time in there at work.

It was always a "even though this is a bit uncomfortable, the experience is worth it" kind of thing for me.

To be clear, this wasn’t a diss at VR, but rather corpos who’re faced with a technology to create entire worlds free of physical constraints, and all they come up with is boring corpo bullshit and bringing back all the constraints from the physical world.

“Oh you want to be a dragon? How weird and unprofessional. What would your fellow human beings think? No, all you get is a copy of your face on a humanoid torso. The legs will be added later maybe.”

@volpeon A bit like how corpos try to enforce scarcity on digital goods that can be freely copied and shared. :D

Oh gee, I wonder why none of it has gone anywhere. I can’t imagine anything more fun than sitting in a virtual meeting room looking at a powerpoint presentation on a virtual screen, depleting the life force of everyone involved. It’s truly a mystery

@volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip I get home from work in the bad cage to join Zuckerberg in the good virtual cage to do my virtual programming while my virtual boss peers over me

And once the work day is over, I come home to my piece of virtual land knowing the (real) loan I took to purchase it has gotten a little bit smaller yet again, and that in a few months I will finally be able to afford virtual workers to build a virtual building in this virtual land

@volpeon I think my favorite was the VR demo of shopping at a grocery store, complete with a virtual shopping cart and bad music, and aisles you had to walk down to look at products and prices.

@volpeon at least the White Wolf tabletop games set in their fictional 22nd century with Augmented Reality got this right

"No matter their appearance, it is rude to pull down your system and see what someone actually looks like"

@volpeon@icy.wyvern.rip this was the buzzword driven hype I understand the least

like, vr wasn't a new thing?

and yet suddenly corpos were like we need metaverse

facebook even named itself after that supposedly, tho in my headcanon it's named after fedi meta

then it all crashed and burned in a few months and everyone just forgot it

except facebook is still renamed to that
