i should stop shitting on debian but i’m still not over that one time i tried to maintain a single package for it

@stefan being old isn’t even the problem, it’s being resistant to change

the sheer masochism it takes to put up with that kind of distro tooling in 2024

@stefan like, iirc apt technically allows swapping out the dependency resolver for something else because they wanted to make that part modular but nobody has done that work

so other distros went ahead and got SAT solvers that work really well while apt still wants to remove your entire GUI if you’re running sid and the repos aren’t consistent (because they haven’t figured that out either)

@wizard @stefan opensuse’s package management had a SAT solver in 2008 so debian was already behind the curve by then

@mia Oh yeah I remember apt being... Interesting with dependencies. Though if you are fancy you can get the same result with arch as well. blobcatjoy

@june it was incredibly hard to do right because the tools are old and rusty. actually worse than making a windows installer package.
