[Boosts appreciated] Statement on Frameworks sponsoring of certain FOSS maintainers/projects
Show content

I paid a fuckton of money for my @frameworkcomputer laptop parts. I paid extra for the parts I could've saved money on elsewhere because I wanted to support the company and what they stand for. I even ported Debian to the RISC-V Motherboard for the product that made Framework Framework: The Framework 13.

Now Framework decided to sponsor Omarchy and Hyprland, the leaderships of which are not just "politically of a different opinion", they are actively toxic, hostile and highly discriminatory, to phrase it euphemistically.

Nirav Patel responded to this in the community forum, essentially doubling down on the decision to take a "big tent approach".

I want to reiterate: __This isn't about "political differences", because the political difference are actively harmful to democracy itself, and the physical safety of marginalised communities.

Someone I supported in good faith with both code and money turned around and gave this money to multiple people who'd rather see me dead for existing.

Needless to say, I feel quite betrayed and I'm really torn on wether or not I should even continue and proceed with the port for the second RISC-V mainboard, because I don't want to end up supporting the hate towards me, my wife or other people in the same situation as me.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels betrayed by this decision.

@lucydev @frameworkcomputer I was so happy with my framework 12... (https://valdyas.org/fading/hardware/happy-with-the-framework-12-laptop/) -- and now I don't know what to do. I mean, I cannot send it back, but when I read that thread I started getting ashamed of myself for reading it _on_ that laptop.

@halla I mean the hardware itself did not change and if the device itself is still good and usuable.

The company policy seems really bad but they have your money already so nothing you can do abour that sadly.

So your options would be a) selling it taking a loss or b) using it atleast till its dead but not give framework any money until stuff improves.

What you wanna do is up to you obvs.

@stefan Yeah... I'll keep using it, I guess, since the keyboard is really good. But... Quite a bit of the happiness has gone.

I mean, they used the application I maintain, , in the store page for the 12, and now that just weirds me out.

@halla Well I mean such devices are destined for suxh stuff. I mean I did bite into a very sour apple as well with purism years and years back.

But I did get a librem 11 instead of a librem 5. Other than its shoddy battery life I like the 11 (its x86 based tablet thingie) But I very much dispise purism as a company, even they do great deeds for mobile linux.

But also ... have a big huggie akko_hug and thank you for maintaining krita. Its such a great piece of software.

Time to get some cool sticker to put over the framework-logo

@stefan Oh, yeah, Purism... Got burned by that, too (almost literally, since that brick got HOT).

And, yes, I will go shop for a nice big sticker!

@halla @stefan I'm also going sticker shopping for my Framework 13. Unless there is a *big* turnaround from the company, my laptop is unfortunately not getting any upgrades.

@stefan I got some antifa stickers that should cover that logo comprehensively...

@piepants @stefan I wanted a bubble-gum colored pen, but guess I'll do with a third-party pen for now.
