Is it really such a difficult concept to be aware of risks even when they seem highly improbable now and being prepared for them so they won’t hurt you as badly as if you were unprepared?

@volpeon following on from what I said on Bluesky: I think the UX problems and the culture surrounding ActivityPub/fedi have burnt the place for more "average" people. And that's a problem. Same thing with Linux.

I think that's why people are going for fedi at the anti-censorship of art angle, rather than the decentralised one.

@Flaky It’s not even just Bluesky vs fedi or anything else I’m talking about. I’m just astonished every time a platform pulls a bad move and everyone goes into full crisis mode, lamenting how much it sucks and how much is destroyed. Discord deleting a server and suddenly a lot of knowledge is gone. People uploading their files exclusively to the cloud and losing them because they got banned for some reason.
You’d think people would learn after all the times it did happen before, but no.

@volpeon though some of them advertising fedi for, uh, certain art I'll say, could also be creating an image problem for fedi as well. Even if it's not all of fedi. 😐

@volpeon Yeah I get that. I'm trying to have more than one basket without wearing myself thin.

I think in the context of social media (not to go back to it, just one I see happening lot), people are just tired of hopping and want The One Forever Platform when I don't think any platform is equipped to be that right now.

@Flaky as if fedi ever had a really good image in the mainstream to begin with.

There is always something "wrong" with us seemingly. Its either to "nerdy", to complicated, or something else that people like to nitpick.

I found a cozy place for myself, met extremely nice people and happy in my little corner of the internet. I can be myself here.

I am often unsure if I ever want "mainstream" attention in a big way. It would in my eyes maybe even break what makes fedi great. Its quirkyness and uniqueness.

I can hear some horrorstories. I don't want these here. I can though tolerate other people expressing themselves. Even with NSFW stuff. Mostly its properly tagged and CW'ed so I don't see a problem with that personally.

Maybe just don't care enough for an "image"

@stefan Not so much mainstreaminess (I don't think fedi will enter that zeitgeist, for better or worse), moreso that the public perception can hurt even people who would greatly benefit from this network.

I'm giving Wafrn a try though and very early first impression is, this might actually help. They implement both protocols and seem to have cultivated a friendlier culture (fedi gets stereotyped as loud angry nerds, which I can't say I haven't ran into myself.)

@volpeon
It's very smart to do so. However, it's a rabbit hole that can be just as dangerous if not more so than the risk that may never come.

What I'm really going on about is the people who are obsessed with being over prepared for every contingency.

But you really said it right. Lessen the hurt and make sure you survive the trouble.

@Flaky Nice and balanced take. Love to see it. Not too much to add here.

I did not hear of wafrn before even. Looks interesting for people who want to be on both sites which is valid as well

@stefan Yeah Wafrn is mainly AP but does ATProto by ways of giving your Wafrn account an associated Bluesky account, letting you interact with Bluesky users. It's simple in how it does it but it's also really good. Very much "have your cake and eat it".

They're also experimenting with migration of Bluesky accounts to them. I don't know how well that'd go but I'm looking forward to it.

@volpeon As a security risk management professional, yes, it's surprisingly tough to get people to put effort into defending from something that might or might not happen.
