@snow @rick got an hdmi to csi adapter, power/reset button and power/disk led stuff (low profile bracket should also be somewhere probably), and a janky usb c power/data splitter

@snow @rick I'll disagree with that, sure if you don't give a fuck then maybe but those are usually lacking basic features like ECC, expansion you get with real server platforms etc.

@snow @rick also I'm still dissing on all the consumer PCIe expansion slots for not having open backs for installing longer cards. Such an awesome design.

@rick @snow now don't get me wrong, they're fine if you don't care about reliability or you're just learning but not really something I would use for running things 24/7.

@lapine @rick it is in fact fine for the vast majority of usecases
but you do you

@snow @rick it is fine if you don't expect it to be reliable that's all there is to it.

@lapine @snow thats why i host important communication stuff like fedi or matrix, not at home..

for everything else i have backups xD

@lapine @snow on the otherhand, i don't wanna host my data/files externally.. only at home.. without direct access from the net xD

@rick @snow yeah that's understandable. Almost done building my silly home server myself. Just need to order fans that actually fit in the form factor that I need because the ones I ordered were too thick.

@lapine @snow for my new nas i wanna order a 19inch rack case.. and some hdds and a board etc.. this is my first real hardware buildup since ears xD

> thats why i host important communication stuff like fedi or matrix, not at home..
like i said tho it's fine, literally not an issue
you will run into countless other defects or plain old user error first before the chance of cosmic bitflips in your ram becomes a problem worth worrying about
have backups, be prepared to use them, and then you're good
yes it's even okay for ZFS even tho the myth that one needs ECC for that sticks around pervasively

@lapine @snow mhhh i just use the inbuild snaptshot backup option..

@snow @rick @lapine me who uses "consumer"-hardware for years to run my server from.

I had one HDD die and one PCI to sata adapter die so far after years of service.

Reliability is more affected by my poking with software rather than hardware tbh.

I did update the hardware like half a year ago to AM4 from like a 1150-board to an AM4 platform

And the thing does run 24/7.

I dunno why people really need a " real" server platform at home. Ecc might be nice but I dunno what Issues non-ECC can cause.
