can i ask if there's some particular why netcup seems to have exploded in popularity as a server host lately?

for the past year or so i've seen people recommend them constantly. is it simply because they're one of the few hosts who can compete with hetzners price/specs ratio?

@quad never heard of them and i frequent HN, so maybe it's regional or field-adjacent?

@picofarad well i'd heard of them, i just feel like during the past year or so they started popping up as a recommendation around the fediverse

i suspect part of the reason is that many fedi admins hate hetzner. doesn't help much if they all just centralize on a different host though

@quad @picofarad tbh they just were the cheapest for me since Root-Servers on Hetzner are freaking expensive.

I did never really figure the IPv6 Voodoo that netcup does. So mine runs v4 only.

@stefan @quad we have a /24 so we also don't pay for (our own block of) ipv6. Sometimes it annoys me, but usually not.

@quad netcup is pretty decent. I use them.
It's a cheap hosting provider that's been around for a while and has a good reputation. Not thaaaat many of those

@sogga well i know that. i've used them probably like 10 years ago.

i just don't get why it's them. Stuff like Aruba (not the HP one) has also been around for ages and their pricing isn't far off: https://www.arubacloud.com/vps/

@stefan @picofarad Fair, but why netcup? How did you find out about them? Why didn't you end up on another host like Arubacloud? Were they just the absolute cheapest non-Hetzner option?

Also why do so many of these hosting providers do so much IPv6 voodoo that only works if you bend the linux kernel too far. I hate it, finding a KVM host where you can actually install OpenBSD and use IPv6 is surprisingly difficult.

@quad @picofarad I think a friend told me about them nkoThink Also helps they are germany based I suppose.

They were fairly cheap for getting a root-server as well with some dedicated cores and decent storage. I did change plans recently as well. I think I was paying 9.81 for two dedicated cores 8GB of Ram and I think 160GB of storage

@stefan @picofarad Alright. Chosing a German host makes sense if you're in Germany I guess

@quad @picofarad ye. Also they do not formally have a datacap in their plans

@stefan @picofarad Guess that's nice. Data caps are something few people tend to realistically hit though, unless they use it to seed a billion torrents.

But I do know surprisingly many people who chose Hetzner because they had a 20 TB cap, then they proceed to only use like 50GB per month

@quad @picofarad ye thats right. Though netcup will also limit traffic to 200Mbit when you exceed 2TB Traffic over 24h

@stefan @picofarad every host has an abuse limit, i'd hope.
