Hoi Fedi. Ich komm wohl nicht mehr drumrum... Ich werd mir wohl nen Drucker/Scanner kaufen müssen.

Könnt ihr mir was nettes empfehlen? Was ich brauch:

- gerne ein kleines Gerät weil ich es nach Gebrauch gerne wegpacken wollte.
- Muss A4-Papier und US Letter (ANSI A) unterstützen.

@aetios @kadse thats generally what I heard as well so I would rather avoid buying one of those. I am generally fine with inkjet stuff being more expensive than toner

@stefan @kadse I've thrown away all my inkjet printers and only print with a laser printer anymore. Always ready at a moment's notice and never dries out. For normal folk a regular toner lasts forever. Buy one black and white extra in case they stop selling it and you have a printer for a lifetime...

@aetios @kadse Oh wait I guess I totally misunderstood you... (Sometimes english is better lol)

Had some slight confusion with LaserJet vs. Inkjet blobcatjoy

Looking stuff up It seems to be there are some B-Ware models of that thing as well which are slightly cheaper but do not come with toner. I would likely end up buying a new since I assume that one comes with toner?

1 Cartridge of them is like about 50€ for 950 pages it says. Seems okay if you think about cost of inkjet ink. where one is like 38€ and does 550 pages...

Just the printer itself being kinda expensive and hp being well hp. They work with linux but I kind of also hate their smart printers

@aetios @kadse what a fucking scam man. Worse than mafia. If I would need to buy toner anyway I can likely buy some refurb I guess.

@stefan @aetios @kadse get a used laserjet 4xxx. yes these are ancient, but generally in good shape (which speaks for their durability). when they are, they don’t print any worse than current models. when they’re not, you can get a maintenance kit that’ll replace all the parts that are subject to mechanical wear. cartridges are dirt cheap as well; 10.000(!) pages for €30. there’s some sort of cartridge DRM but all it does is show a warning at startup that you can simply ignore.

@aetios @stefan @kadse for scanning, just get a dedicated scanner. most of them should work fine with any OS.

@aetios @stefan @kadse toner is extremely cheap for the manufacturer. it being such a massive scam is why there’s DRM on cartridges and “3rd party means worse quality” misinfo campaigns

@mia @stefan @kadse its not heavy in the sense of 'i could never carry this' but it is heavy in the sense of 'this is an unwieldy block of heft and I need to move it two flights of stairs just to print something'

@aetios @mia Where did this conversation went lol.

I am aware that ink/toner is a massive scam in general. But what I gonna do about it? Build my own printer (no).

Generally a printer/scanner combo seems like the better idea for me anyway. Like you could get a printer and a scanner seperate but they take up more space and stuff I think. Also I dunno if thats really cheaper as well.

Like dedicated only printer seems like not too far off in price from the Printer/Scanner I was send already. Atleast if I look at new ones. Yes I know used stuff exists...

I would generally consider 25kg to be heavy as well. Certainly too heavy to just "put away the printer after use"

@aetios @mia @kadse just as a headsup to you all. I ended up buying that HP printer. It seems to be fine enough for my uses. But I made an alteration. The M140WE is an HP+ printer (which HP even discontinued) that only and ever accepts HP toner and needs cloud shit to work.

Good thing is there is an non e-model the M140W. Now my only hope is that the thing will take 3rd party toner which are a bit cheaper. But I bought one genuine toner if thats whats needed. 950 pages should last me a long while anyway.

Funnily enough the M140W is also cheaper being 129 €

@aetios @kadse @mia Printer made it here. Its quite small even. Just need to buy some furniture to put it on lol right now its on the floor.

Text comes out quite well Images look decent enough. Prints the sewing patterns just the way I need them. Scanner also works good. Just needed to install hplip, plug it in via USB and set it up real quick. Printing worked and scanning worked good in Linux.

Will be interesting to see if it works with that 3rd party toner. Though I will empty the thing it came with beforehand.
