@stefan @weebdeluxe
+1 for Mint. IMHO a good point to start.
If you prefer resource efficiency, I'd suggest to have a look for the "Mint Mate" edition. Those who don't care can go with "Mint Cinnamon".

@weebdeluxe my answer, any distro will work fine
but your GTX 1050 is something needed to care because almost DEs are now trying to move to Wayland and NVIDIA is a$$ so better to select DEs properly than asking for a distro

@weebdeluxe I've tried quite a few myself. I'm also a gamer, so which distro to go with was a pretty big consideration. For the most part it doesn't matter a lot but ultimately I've been happiest with Arch and Debian (really probably happiest of all with Debian even.) As others mentioned, nVidia is being kind of crappy about Linux by keeping parts of their drivers closed and proprietary (ironic once upon a time they were better for Linux, but now they have just enough of the most important parts hidden that it's making life pain for developers.) You'll probably be ok not going to Wayland just yet though? Install DEs that have both like GNOME or KDE and you can go back and forth.

Mint is great for stability, but less great for gaming IMO. Ubuntu is Canonical and GNOME, so bleh.
