customer: “please resize our disk space by 100G”
me: sees disk layout below on the qemu in question grmlrmlgrml figgt euch doch alle…
@puniko the sda2 and sda5 seem to overlap? They have the same ending 🥴 didn’t know that’s possible
@makuru the entier system lives on sda1. no clue what sda2 is used for. its not mounted or anything. and swap at the end always sucks
@puniko atleast one can get ride of swap without risking data loss.
@flandrescarlet @puniko @makuru the heads have to fly that much further to read or write data. 20 years ago this would impart noticeable latency to your system. nowadays i suggest running zram if your only option for swap is spinning rust.
in fact, i still suggest zram unless your use case precludes it somehow.
but if you’re stuck with mechanical drives and zram isn’t appropriate, putting swap in to a shared LVM VG (like the same one that holds /
) will greatly improve access time, too.
@purple @flandrescarlet @makuru also on virtual machines its annoying to resize partition of swap is at the end
