Parts of my company are looking to get rid of personell to save cost and be “future proof”.
And so some HR employees are sending out emials to people they think they could be interested in a settlement.

Got one of those “Angebot zur Abfindung” mail today and asked my boss about it (they apparently have to greenlight this).

He didn’t know anything about it, so we asked our department head, who wrote a very, very angry email to HR, about trying to lay off one of his employees.

Turns out: They got the wrong first name and didn’t check the department. neohaj_googly

@Erpel aren't you too old to worry about job security? (no offense)

@lucy as I said, the got the wrong person because of a mix up with the first name and not checking the department name

Currently I am not concerned about my job security, but who knows what will change? They could decide to make the educational department way smaller.
nowadays you can’t be 100% sure…

@mia for me it is kind of funny. especially knowing my head of department is normally quite a calm personality.
I never read a more angry email from him.

@mia @lucy yes, someone is asked to leave the company.
with an financial settlement and an agency to help you find a new job.
it’s sucks for that person, don’t get me wrong, but they still get quite some help to go on with their career

@stefan @mia Wouldn’t happen because the head of the department has to greenlight the financial settlement because its on their budget and not a special one.

So at least their they would have stopped me. (With all my years in this company the settlement would easily be more than one annual payment)

@Erpel @mia Yeah I know settlements gets expensive quick (danke Gewerkschaften {gut})

I love that thing anyway that when cost cutting is needed. Personal is high up the books. Yeah I get ghey are expensive but they make you money. And releasing good personell might leave you hanging later for short term savings

At my last workplace it was the opposite.

Boss was a cheapo who didn't want to spend money on experienced devs, so I was burned out to death trying to do everything on my own, because hell no I'm not letting an apprentice touch code that will be deployed to customers using my app in mission critical daily operations when I've NOT EVEN been given the time to write a freaking test suite for it.

So fucking glad I'm outta there. All hail personalized programmatic ads; they make me more money now than I ever did in that work place.

@taylan @lain @lucy @Erpel reminds me of apprenticeshit at a startup with a small team… where eventually way too much responsibility was placed on my shoulders (for an apprentice) because i was more qualified than the actual full-time employees. i restructured their entire workflow because it was very disorganized, wrote a lot of tools, did much of the later architecture and overall worked on more customer-visible parts than the rest of the team

did get a bonus for it at least. still way underpaid for what i did though.

@taylan @lain @lucy @Erpel nowadays i’d know better than to work myself to death though. it’s part of my job to tell my superiors when i’m at my limit, and theirs to manage resources and set constraints accordingly. it’s also their responsibility to assign work to someone qualified, and deal with the consequences when shit breaks after they ignored the warnings.

@taylan @lain @lucy @Erpel tbf a lot of manager types in software don’t realize how prone to performance anxiety computer touchers are.

no shit you’re missing deadlines on features and half your shit breaks all the time when your devs have ego problems and can’t trust others to do their job well, can’t give you realistic estimates because they overestimate themselves, can’t say “i don’t know” and will accept any task even if it means abandoning something that’s only half-finished
